CLAIM 2 & 4: PROBLEM SOLVING & COMMUNICATION REASONING

SUPPORTS

The Claim 2 through 4 Supports have been created using Version 3.0 of the Smarter Balanced Item Specifications for each corresponding Claim. The example items in each Claim have been converted to slide shows that can be used in the classroom. Ideas for use include printing slides as full page station or relay activities, using individual items as formative assessments or as a tool for spiral review or Smarter Balanced prep in the Spring. Consider using previous grade-level cards for differentiation as the Computer Adaptive Test on Smarter Balanced adapts to lower grade-levels in these areas if students do not perform well on Claim 1 (Concept and Procedure) items.

Problem-Solving: Students can solve a range of complex well-posed problems in pure and applied mathematics, making productive use of knowledge and problem solving strategies.
Communicating Reasoning: Students can clearly and precisely construct viable arguments to support their own reasoning and to critique the reasoning of others.
Modeling &Data Analysis: Students can analyze complex, real-world scenarios and can construct and use mathematical models to interpret and solve problems.
