Students work in partner sets or in small groups. Each group receives a collection of sorting cards. Students are asked to examine the cards and sort them by creating categories. Students share out their categories and the teacher picks certain categories to ask all students to replicate (with the groups that have already sorted that way being coaches around the room). As the activity progresses, the teacher asks more specific questions about the sorting cards and students work in groups to complete each task.
